Produce season is when reefer weights get serious. Melons, potatoes, onions, citrus and stone fruit load dense and wet, pallet weights swing with the field and the pack, and shippers under harvest pressure will happily fill every cubic foot you give them. It is the season when experienced drivers weigh the most, spend the most at the CAT scale, and still get surprised. It is also the season an air ride scale pays for itself fastest.
Why produce loads run heavy and uneven
Fresh produce is mostly water, which makes it some of the densest freight a dry box ever carries: a floor loaded trailer of potatoes or watermelons reaches the 80,000 pound gross limit long before it runs out of room. Pallet weights are honest guesses at best during harvest, field bins vary, moisture varies, and the packing line does not stop to reweigh. Stack in delivery order rather than weight order, standard at a busy shed, and the axle split becomes anyone’s guess. The result is the classic produce season ticket: gross fine, drive tandem 900 pounds over, restack in the heat and pay to weigh again.
Weighing at the packing shed instead

Produce loading already has a discipline culture: pulp temperatures get probed, trailers get pre cooled, seals get logged. Weight is the one variable still commonly left to guesswork, despite being the one that stops the truck at a state line. Bringing it into the same routine is straightforward once the numbers are live: confirm the empty weights when you arrive, watch the groups while the pallets load, and note the final figures alongside the temperature record before the doors close. Receivers and brokers respond to it too. A time stamped weight from the shed settles short load disputes, supports detention claims when loading ran long, and marks you as the carrier whose produce arrives legal and on time during the exact weeks capacity is scarce and reputations are made.
