How Do Air Bag Suspension Scales Work?

How do air bag suspension scales work? Learn how AirRide Scale turns air bag pressure into live axle group weights using wireless RF sensors, the Air Link and the Loadsense app.

An air bag scale is one of the cleverest ways to weigh a vehicle, because the weighing element is already built into the truck. If your axles ride on air bag (air) suspension, the air pressure in each bag rises and falls with the load it carries. Measure that pressure accurately, apply the right calibration, and you have a live truck scale with no weighbridge in sight. This is exactly how AirRide Scale works.

Step one: air bag pressure sensing

AirRide Scale fits a wireless RF sensor to each air bag axle group. As you load the vehicle, the air springs take more weight and their internal pressure changes. The sensors read that pressure continuously, in real time, on the steer, drive and trailer groups.

Step two: convert pressure to axle weight

Raw pressure is not weight on its own, so AirRide Scale uses calibration and smart algorithms to convert the pressure on each group into an accurate axle group weight in kilograms or pounds. Because it calculates per group, you see how the load is spread, not just one gross figure.

Step three: send the data wirelessly

The sensors are RF, not Bluetooth. They transmit to a single AirRide Air Link hub mounted on the vehicle. The Air Link gathers every sensor and converts the RF signal to Bluetooth so your phone can receive it. Using RF between the sensors and the Air Link is what gives AirRide its stronger range and long battery life across a full truck and trailer.

Step four: view results instantly

The Loadsense mobile app, on iOS and Android, shows your gross weight, each axle group, and a clear legal limit status. Calibrations are stored on your device, and the optional Loadsense cloud portal can share live load data with fleet managers and dispatchers.

Works on air bag suspension only. AirRide Scale reads load through the air springs, so it fits trucks and trailers running air bag (air) suspension on each axle group you want to weigh. Steel, leaf and mechanical spring axle groups are not supported. If your steer, drive and trailer groups ride on air, you are ready for AirRide Scale.

Why this approach wins

No cables to run to the cab, no guesswork, and no detour to a weighbridge. Air bag suspension scales like AirRide give you onboard weighing that is accurate, wireless and always with you, which is why they are spreading fast across fleets in the USA, Canada and Europe.
